What is a nightmare?

This was a question posed by Bardo's friend in the car today.  Bardo confidently replied, "A nightmare is a really loud dream.  It's so loud it hurts.  One time I had a nightmare."  Wow.  I never knew! His friend said he had a bad dream once about spiders crawling all over him.  I would call that a nightmare.
